Something Special Is Happening on Route 66

Well now… I’ve caught wind of something worth sharing.

Along that long, storied stretch of Route 66, one of Oklahoma’s most beloved roadside stops is getting a fresh new chapter. The Blue Whale of Catoosa will soon welcome travelers once again in a whole new way.

On May 30, 2026, folks from near and far are invited to celebrate the opening of the new Blue Whale Visitors Center.

And if you ask me… that’s the kind of moment Route 66 was made for.

A Quick Look at the Event

Here’s what’s coming up:

Location: Catoosa, Oklahoma
Date: May 30, 2026
Occasion: Grand opening of the Blue Whale Visitors Center
Celebration: Blue Whale Day, with activities beginning in the morning

This isn’t just a simple opening. It’s part of a wider revival happening all along Route 66 as it approaches its 100-year anniversary.

Why the Blue Whale Still Matters

The Blue Whale isn’t just a roadside attraction.

It’s a piece of American road trip history.

Built in the early 1970s, it became a place where families stopped, stretched their legs, took photos, and made memories. Over time, it turned into one of the most recognizable landmarks on Route 66.

Now, with the addition of a visitors center, it’s being reintroduced to a whole new generation of travelers.

What Travelers Can Expect in 2026

If you’re planning a Route 66 trip, this stop is about as classic as it gets.

You can expect:

  • A restored and celebrated landmark
  • A new visitors center to enhance the experience
  • A gathering of fellow travelers, road trippers, and Route 66 enthusiasts
  • Plenty of photo-worthy moments

It’s the kind of place where people slow down for a bit… and that’s part of the magic.

Making a Day of It (or Maybe More)

One thing I’ve noticed over the years…

The best trips along Route 66 aren’t rushed.

They’re the ones where you give yourself time to explore, wander, and enjoy the stops along the way.

The Blue Whale fits perfectly into a day of discovery in northeast Oklahoma, especially with so many scenic spots, small towns, and hidden corners nearby.

A Little Closer to Home…

Not too far from Catoosa, tucked into the trees of northeast Oklahoma, something new is taking shape.

It’s called Whimsy Waypoint.

We’re building a small collection of themed cabins designed for folks who enjoy places that feel a little different… a little more memorable… and a little more connected to the experience of where they are.

We’re not quite open just yet, but we’re getting close.

If you’re planning a future trip through the area, you’re welcome to take a look and follow along as things come together.

A Good Excuse for a Road Trip

Between the Blue Whale’s new beginning and the Route 66 centennial on the horizon, 2026 is shaping up to be a meaningful year for the Mother Road.

If you’ve ever thought about taking that trip… this might be the right time.

Slow down a little.
Take a few photos.
Find a few places that surprise you.

That’s usually where the best memories live.

Until Then…

I’ll keep an eye on the road and share anything else worth stopping for.

There’s always something interesting just around the bend.
