I’ve been following my nose around Northeast Oklahoma lately, and eventually every good trail seems to lead to smoke.
Barbecue smoke.
So if you’re staying near Vinita, Grand Lake or Route 66 and wondering where to find some of the best BBQ in the area, I’ve done a little wandering for you.

Shout & Sack / Big Dawg Smoked Meats | Vinita
Let’s begin close to Base Camp.
Shout and Sack LLC sits right on historic Route 66 in Vinita and is one of those wonderfully Oklahoma places where you might stop for fuel and discover smoked meat demanding your attention.
Reviews repeatedly call out the ribs and BBQ beef sandwiches, and the on-site food operation is known for Big Dawg smoked meats. It’s casual, local and wonderfully unpretentious. In other words, don’t let the gas pumps fool you.
Sometimes adventure hides in strange places.
Sometimes brisket does, too.
Nowhere on Route 66 | Afton
Next, point the Whimsy compass toward Afton and head to a place whose name makes giving directions particularly entertaining:
Nowhere on Route 66.
This rustic, family-run BBQ joint sits along historic Route 66 and specializes in all-wood-smoked, hand-rubbed meats. Reviews consistently mention the ribs, brisket and pulled pork, along with friendly service and generous portions.
One creation especially caught my wandering eye: the Oklahoma Twister, loaded wedge fries topped with pulled pork, cheese, ranch and chives.
That’s not lunch.
That’s an event.
For guests exploring the Mother Road from Whimsy Waypoint, this one makes an especially fitting BBQ side quest.
RoadHog Saloon | Afton
If your barbecue expedition takes you farther into the Grand Lake area, there’s another Afton stop worth knowing about.
RoadHog Saloon has a laid-back bar-and-grill atmosphere, and reviews repeatedly mention its BBQ, brisket and ribs, along with generous portions. Grand Lake dining guides also highlight it as a popular BBQ stop around the lake.
It’s the sort of place I’d put on the list when you’re spending the day exploring Grand Lake and hunger suddenly announces itself.

Now let’s wander toward Grove.
OUR HOUSE BBQ CO. is a craft barbecue spot serving slow-smoked premium meats, house sausage and scratch-made sides near Grand Lake.
Their philosophy is delightfully simple: the meat is smoked fresh daily, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
Reviews are strong, too, with diners frequently describing it as destination-worthy barbecue rather than simply a convenient place to eat near the lake.
Whimsy’s translation?
Don’t wander in too late.
Then Bring That Full Belly Back to Base Camp
And this is where I point the compass home.
Whimsy Waypoint isn’t a barbecue restaurant.
We know our lane.
But we make a mighty fine Base Camp for exploring the best BBQ around Vinita, Route 66 and Grand Lake.
Stay in the military-inspired Mission Base or mosey into the Old West at Stumble Rock Inn, then use Whimsy Waypoint as home base for a Northeast Oklahoma food adventure.
Spend the afternoon exploring Route 66. Chase down some ribs or brisket. Wander Grand Lake. Then head back into the woods.
Once you’re home, there’s no hotel hallway waiting for you.
There’s your cabin.
Your private soaking tub.
Your firepit.
The wooded trails.
Chimney Commons.
And perhaps a strategic loosening of the belt after an overly ambitious encounter with brisket.

That’s one of my favorite things about staying near Vinita, Oklahoma.
