Whimsy has been snooping around Northeast Oklahoma again.
I’ve poked down side roads. Wandered around old Route 66. Investigated suspicious-looking signs. Stared at things that probably didn’t require staring at. And I’ve discovered something:
Some of the best things to do near Vinita, Oklahoma and Grand Lake aren’t necessarily the places with giant billboards pointing toward them.
They’re the little discoveries.
The places that make you say, “How did we not know this was here?”
So, if you’re staying at Whimsy Waypoint near Vinita, Grand Lake and Route 66, grab your camera, your curiosity and possibly a snack.
Whimsy knows some places.
1. Hunt for Vinita’s Hidden Route 66 Treasures
Everybody drives Route 66.
Whimsy prefers to investigate it.
Downtown Vinita has some wonderfully overlooked pieces of Mother Road history, including historic architecture, murals and even a Will Rogers Highway monument that many travelers apparently zip right past.
There’s also the Rt 66 Vinita Breezeway, an old downtown alley transformed into a little Route 66 corridor filled with art and nostalgia.
And keep your eyeballs switched ON.
There may be tiny surprises hiding where most travelers never bother looking.
Whimsy Challenge: Park the car and explore downtown Vinita on foot. Find something strange, historic or completely unexpected before getting back in.
That’s proper wandering.
2. Become Part of a Route 66 Mural
Regular murals just sit there.
Vinita apparently decided that wasn’t enough.
Dr. Will’s Great Route 66 Mural Adventure features more than a dozen interactive murals where visitors become part of the scene instead of merely photographing it. There’s even a free self-guided option.
Try to take a completely serious photograph.
Whimsy predicts failure.
This is one of the more unusual Route 66 attractions in Vinita, Oklahoma, especially for couples and families who want something besides another “stand beside the sign and smile” photograph.
3. Discover Vinita’s Story at Eastern Trails Museum
Tucked near the Vinita Public Library is the Eastern Trails Museum.
Inside you’ll discover local history, Route 66 memorabilia, railroad history, Native American history and recreated pieces of early Vinita, including an old general store, post office and doctor’s office. Admission is free.
Big museums tell big stories.
Little museums sometimes tell the stories everybody else forgot.
Whimsy likes those better.
4. Find a Quiet Corner at Vinita Lake
Want something even simpler?
Sneak away to Vinita Lake Park.
This isn’t an amusement park wearing a lake costume. It’s a quieter local spot where you can fish, wander, catch a sunset or simply sit somewhere peaceful.
Translation:
No itinerary required.
Bring coffee. Bring a fishing pole. Bring someone you actually enjoy talking to.
Or don’t talk at all.
Whimsy permits this.
5. Walk Through a Nearly Forgotten Civil War Story
History hunters should put Cabin Creek Battlefield on their Northeast Oklahoma exploration list.
Two Civil War battles were fought here, in 1863 and 1864, connected to attempts to disrupt Union supply movements heading toward Fort Gibson.
Today, it is quiet countryside.
That’s precisely what makes it interesting.
Stand there for a moment and imagine what happened on that same ground more than 160 years ago.
Not flashy.
Not crowded.
Definitely a hidden gem.
6. Go Treasure Hunting in Downtown Vinita
Now we’re talking.
The Vinita Antique Mall on historic Route 66 contains more than 7,000 square feet of antiques, collectibles, vintage décor and Americana, plus a soda fountain.
Whimsy’s rule for antique stores:
You aren’t looking for anything until you suddenly desperately need something you didn’t know existed five minutes ago.
Route 66 travelers, consider yourselves warned.
7. Wander Toward the Water
Grand Lake has plenty of famous boating and recreation spots, but sometimes the better lake day is the quieter one.
Places such as Bernice Area at Grand Lake State Park offer shoreline walks, fishing and wide-open lake views, while the Disney Area at Grand Lake State Park near Pensacola Dam gives explorers another side of the Grand Lake experience.
Don’t schedule every minute.
Pick a road.
Follow the water.
See what happens.
That’s basically Whimsy’s entire travel philosophy.
